I am not catholic but i am in love with the missals specially before vatican 2 ...i have 5 so far 1957,1959,1962,and 2 from 1970 plus a 1970 prayer book and a few other mary devotionals from 1970
This was very helpful, but I have a question: what do I read on week days in "ordinary time?" After Low Sunday, the only readings are for Sunday masses.
Our local chapel lists out the Mass for the day, below is for the week of April 7th 2024 Sunday - Low Sunday Monday - Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Transferred) Tuesday - No Public Mass Wednesday - Votive Mass of St. Joseph Thursday - St. Leo the Great, Pope, Confessor & Doctor Friday - Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Saturday - St. Hermenegild, Martyr There are websites that list the propers for the day - propria.org/today/
What is low Sunday? Every Sunday at my parish is doing high masses and low in the morning
Low Mass is when the priest reads or speaks the entire liturgy, with the assistance of one or more altar servers. only the altar boys respond to the priest. The congregation and choir may sing hymns. Sung or High Mass includes the Asperges before Mass, in which the priest sprinkles the congregation with Holy Water as part of the opening liturgical ceremony. Sung Mass is so called because many of the prayers of the Mass are sung by the priest, choir, or schola. Sung Mass also usually employs the use of incense. At Sung Mass, the faithful chant the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei with the Schola (choir). The congregation also responds to the Priest in chant during multiple points during the Mass. Solemn Mass (also known as a Solemn High Mass), a type of Sung mass, is the full ceremonial form of the Tridentine Mass, celebrated by a priest with a deacon and a subdeacon, requiring most of the parts of the Mass to be sung, and the use of incense. The parts assigned to the deacon and subdeacon are often done by priests in vestments proper to those roles.

came across your youtube video and i recently bought a St. andrew 1956 missal. does it use 1962 rubrics or 1940s rubric?
Hello, it will not be the 1962 as those were not in place yet. The only changes you will see from the 1940's edition is the new Holy Week and changed Propers for the Feast of the Assumption on August 15th.

Regarding dialogue mass: When I was in Catholic school we were taught to respond as the altar boys did, which is how I learned Latin. Very few adults would respond at mass, but the school children certainly did. When I first began attending mass at SSPX, I noticed I was one of the rare ones who responded. No one told me I shouldn't, so I continue to do so. I remember the nuns telling us our response helps keep us focused on the mass instead of daydreaming.
Does the Angelus press missal just work for SSPX? I’m not too familiar with their mass if it’s the same to the TLM.
Hello, the Angelus Press missal can be used at any traditional Latin Mass. There are some chapels that use the pre-55 liturgy, the missal can be used but Holy Week and some feasts will be different.
I have the Angelus press missal and also the Father Lasance missal. I use them at the SSPX church. They follow exactly the Holy Week schedule in the Angelus Press missal. The rest of the year, I normally use the Father Lasance missal. I do find the pages in the Angelus missal to be rather thin and they are much more difficult for me to turn pages. The Lasance missal has thicker pages. The Angelus missal also has notes about certain days of the year which Lasance doesn't. In fact, the notes and pictures in the Angelus Press missal are the same ones used in my old 1960 Marian Missal. Another note: Angelus and Lasance has the mass as well as all the collects, epistles, gospels, etc. in Latin and English. My old Marian and St Joseph missals only had the mass in Latin and English, the rest of the books are English only.
Was there ever a Father Stedman missal for the daily Mass? I only ever see them as Sunday Missal and a special Lent version. Good video

Hello, the Magnificat is for the New Order of Mass or Novus Ordo. For the Latin Mass I would recommend the Missal
We subscribe now to the Benedictus, which is the equivalent of the Magnificat for the TLM. I find the Benedictus helps orientate someone new to the TLM to the parts of the Mass.
That sounds lovely - I go to both NO and as often as I can to the Traditional, which is much further to travel, so I cannot do weekdays there. I found the Magnificat wonderful for showing me the weekday masses and their saints and reflections; an equivalent TLM version sounds too good to be true! 🙏God bless you.
Hello, I am confused on how to use a missal. But I have a 1962 Angelus Press Missal. I was wondering if this missal for Latin Mass only? It has translations, but I am confused on whether or not I can use this at regular mass that doesn't do latin mass?
Hello, the 1962 Angelus Press Missal is for the Latin Mass. It cannot be used for the New Mass (Ordinary Form).

The traditional missal does not have ordinary time. Right now we are in Time after Pentecost. This Sunday October 22nd is the Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost

People should be silent at the priest's private low Mass. You show if the missal has the music and notation for High Mass in the back. Should have the ending prayers by Pope Leo XIII and the added by Pope Pius XII in 1945: "Immaculate Mary, pray for us." (3 times) I need to buy a new Missal, I wore out (2) and an old missal. Started with St. Joesph when young, my last missal is St. Andrew. I'm leaning towards the Roman Missal, because larger lettering. God Bless you.
I was confirmed recently and wanted to be part of a Tridentine Mass community, which I was lucky to find. I have picked up all the main prayers and acclamations: Ave Maria, Pater Noster, Gloria, Credo, Agnus Dei. I'm struggling through, but doing, Latin Divine Office. If I buy an old missal, 1957 or 1962, etc., from the ones I'm seeing on Ebay, would the dates be the same for the current Masses - or are the current Masses following the Post Vatican II Feast Days and readings?
Most of the Tridentine Mass communities will follow the 1962 calendar and some the 1954. No Tridentine Mass will follow the post Vatican II calendar.

There are things in the Missal from Angelus Press that I like, and things in Fr. Lasance's Missal that I don't like.....those things are the daily necessary prayers. Other than that, my preference for Daily Mass is the Fr. Lasance Missal.

I see the confusion, my video covers the use of a missal for the Traditional Latin Mass. In our missal today is the 12th Sunday after Pentecost. If you are using a missal that has today as the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time then that is a Novus Ordo missal. I would not have any information for that missal.

Hello, yes you can use the 1959 edition of the Saint Joseph missal to understand the Holy Mass. Be sure to read the introduction in the missal and read the red text in the Ordinary of the Mass to help understand.
I'm looking to replace my Baronius Missal with one that has full text for daily Mass readings so I don't have to flip around the book. What are my options? Taylor Marshall says Fr. Lasance. Is that the only one?
Hello. There is no daily missal that I know of that will have the full texts for the daily Propers for Holy Mass. There is a St Joseph continuous Sunday missal but no daily. With the Father Lasance missal you will still need to flip around, perhaps not as much as the Baronius Missal. For instance in the Fr. Lasance for August 9th, Feast of St. John Marie Vianney. You start on the Ordinary, then for the Propers page 1349 and flip to 1149 for the Collect

No difficulty at all. I sometimes use a 1945 Lasance missal at Holy Mass with no difficulty.

Yes, you can use a 1961 missal in place of a 1962 missal or when attending a TLM that uses the 1962 missal

In my opinion the “most correct “ missal is the Vulgata, and has been for many centuries 😊
Are you speaking of the Vulgate Bible or Vulgata as in the common tongue so an all english missal or an Altar missal like one a priest would use? I have not heard of a Vulgata missal and would like to know more.

@@PaulFloresPhotography Thanks for getting back to me. For all of them. I'm a Traditional Catholic and need a date before 1962. You mentioned one of them was 1962, but you also said it was "updated and revised". The "revised" scares me.
The ones shown have a imprimatur of 1962 or earlier excluding the Angelus Press edition (Roman Catholic Daily Missal) which does not have an imprimatur but does follow the 1962 changes. There are some revisions in the reprints of the St. Andrews and Father Lasance missals but that was only to add the propers to the Feast of the Assumption which was changed in 1950. Nice. Something I find disjointing about the Fr. Lasance is how it flips columns from English to Latin being on opposite sides on the different pages. It was very helpful how you compared that St. Andrew reprint with your 1945! I didn't even know the people replying was allowed until this video, so very helpful all around. thanks
Haunt the thrift stores and find an old (pre 1962) Maryknoll Daily Missal. It's one of the best.
A word about the Saint Joseph missals. Any edition made from 1957 onwards will have the more modern translation. If you want the older translation, get one made from 1956 or earlier. The 1955 Saint Joseph missal is interesting, it still has the pre-1955 Holy Week, but has the updated Mass rubrics. 1956 has the new Holy Week, but older translation.
Why is the Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962 associated with the sspx?
That specific missal is printed by the Angelus Press which is a apostolate of the Society of St. Pius X to provide traditional Catholic literature and doctrine to Americans confused by the changes in the Church after Second Vatican Council and the introduction of the New Mass. I watched a RUclips video by Taylor Marshall on placement of the ribbons and this tutorial brought me to an understanding of how to know when to go back and forth in the pages. Dialogue masses were a precursor of the abominable Vatican 2 mass. At my diocesan Parish latin Mass, they practiced the Dialogue Mass, but they also had Novus Ordo masses too, unfortunately 😞 I disapprove of that abominable dialogue mass
The Dialogue Mass is not an “abomination”. It is a practice that gradually diminished by the 1600s when Baroque faggotry was introduced into the Mass, and the Mass became an opera while the laity became passive spectators who were doing private devotions instead of focusing on the Mass. Pope Pius X restored the ancient use of active participation (via the dialogue Mass) and Gregorian chant.

My Fr. Lasance missal doesn't have such tight binding. My last flat. I dont know if yours just needs to be broken in more or if the manufacturer was just a bit more tight in binding then they usually do.
I ended up selling it and buying another. The binding is much better on the new one

Is there a StAndrews Daily, with soft leather/bendable cover? The one on your table looks hard cover.
The one first shown is a reprint and is only in the hard cover. You may find one used with a flexible cover.
